Citizen Science Volunteer Opportunity

Joy VanderLek

The Cheshire Phenology Project is a joint study conducted by the CT Agricultural Extension Service (CAES) under the direction of Dr. Kelsey Fisher and the Cheshire Pollinator Pathway.

The study will take place at the Cheshire Pollinator Pathway’s Original Garden, 487 North Brooksvale Rd., across from Lock 12.

Volunteer participants will observe sections of the garden, noting phases of plant life, and monitoring pollinators.

Why a phenology study? Consistently observing and noting  the observations gives us information on when flowers bloom and die, when pollinators arrive and leave, and from the observations, we can begin to  see patterns, from year to year, in pollinator activity, weather impacts, and potential developing problems.

Training will be done in Cheshire on Sunday, June 1st at the North Brooksvale garden beginning at 10 a.m.

The Phenology Project will take place weekly, from June – October. Volunteers can sign up for weekly observation shifts in blocks of two-weeks (or more).  Observation shifts generally will take one hour or less.

Community service hours can be earned.  Groups and organizations are welcome. All ages may sign up.
